JUG Wants - Brian Goetz

OK, so I’m probably not the first person to play off of the wants/gets thing. For anyone that missed it, last night we had Brian Goetz from Sun as our presenter for “Effective Concurrent Java”. This was one of the most highly anticipated meetings we have had in a while, as many of our members have read Brian’s work – in addition to many articles on various sites, Brian’s book Java Concurrency in Practice was the #1 bestseller at JavaOne in 2006 (just after it was published) and 2007. Many members were throroughly impressed that we were even able to get Brian to our group, so thanks to Jay Zimmerman of NoFluffJustStuff for making this happen for us!

We had over 100 attendees for Brian’s presentation, which is amazing considering the traffic and weather did not exactly provide ideal conditions. The most amazing fact to me was that I didn’t see one single member leave early, and that NEVER happens. The group was obviously very interested in what Brian had to say, and he presented clearly and concisely. Definitely a highlight for Philly JUG. Thanks to Brian for flying down to Philly and hopefully we will see him again in the near future for another great presentation.

Typically we take a hiatus in the summer, but if interest is high enough we could meet in either July or August so stay tuned. We’ve had 5 solid meetings this year already, and our record for meetings in one year is 7, so I’m confident we will be able to break that and keep the raising the bar. Contact me with ideas or meeting suggestions for the fall calendar, and thanks for supporting the JUG!
