"What's New in Java 2 Standard Edition Version 1.4" by Kirk Spadt

Abstract

Sun’s latest Java release, Java 2 Standard Edition version 1.4, promises record-breaking performance enhancements and more functionality for end-to-end enterprise development. These features include a logging api, assert(), regular expressions, more complete security, XML for enterprise integration, JDBC 3.0, CORBA api’s, full internationalization, drag-n-drop support, a complete printing api, and automated client deployment. Higher scalability is achieved with 64-bit support, and significant performance enhancements for reflection, 2D rendering, network, and I/O performance have been made. This presentation details the new features, contrasts them to current methods and technologies that they can replace, and provides code examples to enable the participant to quickly implement selected features

Speaker Bio

Kirk Spadt is responsible for the object design and implementation of the reporting infrastructure and PO processing in a comprehensive application suite for the distribution sector, using J2EE (EJB2.0) on a Weblogic/SQL Server platform, for Skylight Systems, Inc. Spadt previously served as President of Keyware Systems, Inc. where he conceptualized and led the creation of the POSWare system for the Retail industry, and for IBM Corporation. Spadt is certified at the Master level in both Java and Java-EJB, and holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University.
